Kakabeka Falls

Known as Niagara of the North, Kakabeka Falls is an awesome spectacle that leaves an indelible impression on visitors.  The Kaministiquia River plunges nearly 40 meters into sheer-sided gorge, where fossils 1.6 billion years old have been found in the layers of ancient sedimentary rock.  The Kaministiquia River has historically been a trade route for Aboriginals, early explorers, travellers, and fur-traders alike. The river has provided a corridor to move goods from hunting areas, ports, forts and settlements in a landscape that was barely negotiable otherwise. Forests and rough terrain impeded travel, especially that of fur-traders and explorers as they tried to move goods and supplies through the area. Although transportation was made much easier through the use of the river, travellers encountered a challenge when they reached a large precipice known as Kakabeka Falls. In order to move beyond the falls, the voyagers had to carry, or 'portage', their canoes around the steep cliff.
